From Our School

Another school year has come to a close and we bid farewell to our lovely Year 6 children at the traditional Leavers’ Service in church on the last day of term. This is always a moving occasion when the leavers’ share some of their memories of their time at St Margaret’s and the rest of the school send them out with best wishes for the challenges ahead. There are usually tears – from staff and parents as much as the children!

The Leavers’ service is the culmination of a series of events for Year 6 which include the Diocesan Leavers’ service at St Martin’s Church, an Achievement Assembly and, my personal favourite, the show. One of the perks of being a governor is the opportunity to go to the various assemblies, Christmas productions etc which the children put on, and the Year 6 production is always a highlight. Brilliantly produced and directed by Deputy Head (and Year 6 teacher) Mrs Cashmore, this year the children gave us a magnificent Bugsy Malone. All the class take part and also make much of the set and props – it is a real team effort.

Academically, this was a very successful year for the school and children, with the year 6 SATs results being better than last year, and well above the national average, however the year 6 production always, for me, illustrates what I believe is special about the school. The hard work the children put into the show, the teamwork displayed, and the courage and confidence it takes to sing and dance on stage say much more about the wonderful young people they have become than a set of test results can.

Whilst much of the focus in the Summer Term was on Year 6, the other year groups have also been busy, working hard and enjoying trips to Twycross Zoo, the Sea Life Centre, Botanical Gardens, and Jewellery Quarter Museum.

The staff and children are all now enjoying the summer break (although a little more sunshine would be welcome!) before returning in September to face new challenges.
